Music Wrap A Series

In 2014, Wistron has an opportunity to cooperate with Acoustic Energy, a British speaker brand, on a potential business that our design team will design their wireless product-line. Founded in 1987, Acoustic Energy (AE) made its name with its AE1 Monitor Loudspeaker featuring metal cone technology. However, in recent years it is unable to present a new product that fits the trend of the market: wireless connectivity.
With cooperation with our team from Wistron, we’re going to study what is the future of wireless listening.
A3W, the new AE
We designers work closely with the CMF team and the acoustic team to design the A3W for AE. Given an iconic shape and stand design, multiple A3Ws can be linked via Wifi and create a full acoustic experience in the room.
Special thanks to design lead Jimmy Chen, PM head Peggy Lai, and director Elton Fang on this project.
Experience in home audio
Starting from the portable version, we begin to study the products on the market and try to get the sense of the trendy specs and features. The finding is that the most western brands tend to simplify the user interface on the speaker and put the features into the app while Japanese brands tend to make all the features on the panel. The disadvantage of using the app to control the speaker is that smartphone is loaded with too many applications and to switch back and forth is distracting and sometimes disappointing in experience. Our team decide to take the ground in the middle. We will design some core functions, and simplified them and put them on the speaker.
The smarter audio
Some functions we propose to add to the speaker to create better sound and using experience including auto adjusting sound field, smart sleep timer, and personal moods. With the wheel interface on the top, the user can easily take full control of the speaker. With my personal retrospection, this smart design is totally on the 2017 smart speaker trend back in 2014, the same year Amazon Echo first came around .
A roadmap is delivered to show Wistron’s plan to AE on the future cooperation. From portable size to stationary size, the AE wireless series will cover different scenarios and audiences. AE likes the roadmap, and our design team is asked to design the one-table version with Wifi, and that is A3W.
